Food news!

While surfing the net, I found some interesting food news and thought I would share over here!
Forbes has an interesting feature on the world's most expensive desserts which is totally worth a look if you haven't come accross it yet. Here are two examples from the full report:


The Sultan's Golden Cake available at Ciragon Palace Kempinski; Istanbul for... $1,000!!

"It takes 72 hours to make this edible brick of gold, available by special request for weddings, parties or, say, a Sultan's snack. Spiked with apricots, pears, quince and figs that have been marinating in Jamaican rum for two years, and flavored with shaved caramelized black truffles, this 24-carat gold leaf-covered cake is presented in a sterling silver handcrafted cake box with a golden seal."

Have you got $1.4 million to spend and you don't know how? Do consider some Strawberries Arnaud at the Arnaud's in New Orleans...

For the summer menu, Lenotre has created a “Sweet Summer” macaron collection deviating from sweet or classic flavours. For instance, would you prefer a green peas or tomato macaron glacĂ©? I think I’ll have to drop by a Lenotre to try these, they look intriguing and they look very cute!

In keeping with the subject of extravaganza, the famous Caviar house Petrossian has coupled up with glacier Philippe Faur to create a sorbet which contains 60% caviar- and unsurprisingly has now become the most expensive ice cream in the world ! 18 EUR for 15ml (15ml is nothing! My goodness, not even the equivalent of a sip of coffee!) and recommended to accompany smoked salmon, scallops or simply a baked potato…

Soap ? No. Sugar? Yes! This “pain de sucre” is indeed sugar, but like parmesan, you’ll need to grate it over your cup of tea, yoghurt or fruit tart…Not only is this a cool thing to have in your kitchen, but the manufacturers claim that it has more minerals and vitamins then white sugar and that “less is more” as it’s sweetening strength is a lot greater then regular white sugar.

I haven't tried Lenotre's macarons...how do they compare to Laduree and PH?

Hey Su-Lin! They are OK, not the best IMO (my favourite are Laduree). Lenotre does however have some nice "macarrés" which are square shaped and with really interesting flavours! Those would be worth a try.

This makes me a snob, but I got irritated at Forbes calling the macarons "macaroons." Couldn't even do their homework on the desserts - but I guess they don't have the same budget as one of those desserts ;)
